Native lawyers push for Native judge on Supreme Court

Native lawyers in Canada say a Native judge should be appointed to one of the two seats open on the Supreme Court.

The aboriginal section of the Canadian Bar Association is sponsoring a resolution that calls for the appointment of a Native judge. Lawyer Jeff Harris, chair of the section, says First Nations need to be represented on the court since it is handling Native rights and treaty rights cases.

Appointments to the court are expected in September.
