Means says South Dakota GOP needs to do more

American Indian Movement activist Russell Means says the Republicans need to do more than just show up to pow-wows and other tribal events.

"To get back on track, they need to rejuvenate their presence and not just show up at tribal celebrations," he told The Sioux Falls Argus Leader. "That is expected from them. It means nothing. It is just window dressing. No deeper meaning."

Earlier this year, Means offered to help Republican John Thune defeat Sen. Tom Daschle (D). But he says the Thune campaign has spurred his plan to attract more Indian voters.

Thune's campaign says it is reaching out to Indian Country. Thune attended the Oglala Lakota Nation pow-wow over the weekend.
