Programs aim to keep Native students in school

The Skykomish Valley Indian Education program is one of 65 programs in Washington state that aim to keep Native students in school while promoting tribal culture.

The Skykomish program began at one public school but has grown to cover two districts. It serves about 72 students representing 20 tribes and is funded by a federal grant and the Tulalip Tribes.

According to state statistics, Native students score lower on proficiency tests. Native students have the second-highest dropout rate.
