Mashantucket Tribe holds Schemitzun pow-wow

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut kicked off the 12th annual Feast of Green Corn and Dance on Thursday.

The pow-wow, also known as Schemitzun, is one of the largest in North America. Spread out over four days, it attracts top drum groups and thousands of dancers who compete for more than $400,000 in prizes. The host drum is Mystic River Singers, based locally.

Schemitzun includes a rodeo, food booths and an arts and crafts fair. It is held on the Mashantucket reservation.
