Group fights plans for Wal-Mart near Aztec ruins

A group of business owners, educators and other people interested in preserving Mexico's Indian heritage are fighting a Wal-Mart subsidiary store under construction only a mile from the Aztec city of Teotihuacn.

Local officials and government archaeologists approved the 71,902-square-foot store. They say few business owners protested at the time.

But people fear the huge store will harm their cultural heritage. Artifacts have been discovered at the site but are being relocated by Mexico's Institute of Anthropology and History.

Local families also worry that Wal-Mart will drive them out of business. Wal-Mart of Mexico owns more than 650 department stores, restaurants and supermarkets and takes in more than $11 billion a year.
