Catawba election draws field of hopefuls and a lawsuit

The Catawba Nation of South Carolina will vote tomorrow on a new tribal council and a new constitution.

Tribal members have fought over the vote for several years. Some say Chief Gilbert Blue is not the rightful leader and have filed a lawsuit to oust him. They have tried to hold their own elections.

After gaining federal recognition through an act of Congress, the tribe was supposed to adopt a new constitution. But various problems have plagued the vote so nothing has been approved. One paper said the tribe has gone to the polls 10 times in two years for a constitution.
