Native man told to document U.S. citizenship

A Native man running for state office in Hawaii as a Democrat has been told to prove he is a U.S. citizen or he will be removed from the ballot.

Cort Gallup is Cree who was born Canada. He says the 1794 Jay Treaty recognizes dual citizenship in U.S. and Canada.

The Maui County Clerks Office saw it differently. The clerk said Gallup hasn't shown he is a citizen of the U.S. so he can't run for office in Hawaii.

Republicans filed a challenge to Gallup's candidacy in court but lost on a procedural ground. The clerk ruled on a challenge filed by a voter.
