Bush blocking endorsement of global warming plan

The Bush administration is trying to prevent a international and inter-tribal group from endorsing a plan to reduce global warming, The Washington Post reports.

The Arctic Council is due to release an assessment of climate change on Monday. Members of the group want to make broad policy suggestions to reduce emission of greenhouse gases, The Post said. The policy statement would be released two weeks later.

But the Bush administration doesn't want the council to make recommendations. The administration opposes mandatory cuts in gas emissions and has instead focused on a voluntary program.

The Arctic Council includes representatives of six tribes from the U.S., Canada, Russia and Europe. The tribal members are: the Aleut International Association, the Arctic Athabaskan Council, the Gwich'in Council International, the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, the Saami Council of Norway and the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North.
