Thune sees potential in reservation vote

South Dakota Republican John Thune didn't get a significant portion of the reservation vote on November 2 but his numbers improved from two years earlier.

On the Pine Ridge Reservation, for example, Thune got 546 votes. He only got 248 votes in 2002, when he lost by a slim margin to Sen. Tim Johnson (D-South Dakota).

"We saw some modest improvement," Thune told the Associated Press. "It wasn't a seismic shift."

Republicans and Democrats targeted the state's nine reservations in their campaigns. The votes helped Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D), who was re-elected to the state's sole U.S. House seat.
