Wyoming lawmakers debate status of tribal liaison

The Wyoming Legislature's Select Committee on Tribal Relations discussed the future of the state's tribal liaison at a hearing last week.

Tribal leaders appeared divided about the need for the position and its effectiveness. Some said the liaison didn't have a policy to work from or the support of the state and tribes. One Shoshone leader said the state needs to work directly with the tribal councils.

The Northern Arapaho Tribe and the Eastern Shoshone Tribe were to each pay 25 percent of the liaison's $100,000 salary. The Arapaho council said it couldn't pay this year so the position has been eliminated for now.
