Blackfeet offered at off-reservation school

Students at a high school in Montana say they are excited about learning Blackfeet language and culture.

Great Falls High is the only off-reservation high school in the state to offer a Native language class. This semester, 34 students are enrolled. About a quarter are non-Indian.

Klane King, a Blackfeet from Canada, teaches the class. He hopes students will learn enough Blackfeet to hold conversations. He is also teaching meditations.

The program is part of the Great Falls school district's attempt to improve education for Native students. The district has reduced the dropout rate among Native Americans.
