Can. judge rules against gun registry for Natives

First Nations leaders are praising a judge's ruling that Canada's national gun registry violates the treaty rights of Native hunters.

The judge, in Ontario, said the registry violated the protected rights of Natives and that Natives should not have to buy a gun license. First Nations leaders say their governments should be the ones to regulate hunting.

Nunavut Tunngavik, an organization representing Inuits in the territory of Nunavut, has filed a lawsuit against gun registry. The group says its land claim and treaty agreement protects Inuit hunting rights.
