Federal Recognition
BIA delays decision on Nipmuc recognition by 45 days

Citing outstanding litigation and a heavy workload, the Bureau of Indian Affairs delayed a decision on federal recognition for two Nipmuc tribes from Massachusetts.

The BIA was set to issue a final determination on the Nipmuc Nation and the Chaubunagungamaug Band of Nipmucs. The decision has been delayed by 45 days.

A Clinton administration official had agreed to recognize the Nipmuc Nation but former assistant secretary Neal McCaleb reversed the decision. McCaleb also issued a proposed finding against the Chaubunagungamaug Band.
