All 12 federally recognized tribes in Michigan signed an accord with Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm (D) on Monday to protect, preserve and enhance water resources in the state.
The tribes will meet with the state twice a year to discuss water resource issues. Among the goals of the accord is to protect the Great Lakes, reduce invasive species and prevent pollution.
Additionally, Granholm yesterday signed a revised executive directive to improve state-tribal consultation. It recognizes tribal sovereignty and the right to self-governance.
