Yakama Nation enforces fishing laws on non-Indians

Some non-Indians are questioning whether the Yakama Nation of Washington had jurisdiction to cite them for violation of tribal fishing laws.

The tribe ticketed two non-Indians for fishing without a $30 tribal permit on the Yakima River. The tribe cites an 1855 treaty reserving fishing rights on all water running through or bordering the reservation.

The non-Indians say they were fishing on a part of the river that is not part of the reservation.
