Return of land to California tribe celebrated

The Eureka, California, city council voted 4-0 on Tuesday to return 40 acres to the Wiyot Tribe of the Table Bluff Reservation.

The land is located on the eastern portion of Indian Island, where one of the worst massacres in California history took place, nearly wiping out the tribe. Tribal members and supporters were reportedly in tears when the transfer, which includes an historic tribal village, was approved.

The tribe has agreed not to take the larger of two properties into trust without the written consent of the city. The larger property also came with some conditions attached.
