Work at California burial site disturbs some

About 275 human remains and many more artifacts and burial objects have so far been removed from a burial site in Los Angeles, California.

The developers of Playa Vista, a housing community, have hired archaeologists to exhume and rebury the remains. But members of the Tongva and Acjachemen tribes say their ancestors are being disrespected.

"All around the world, cemeteries are respected, even pet cemeteries," one Acjachemen elder told The New York Times. "We'd be up in arms if our pet cemeteries were desecrated. But our culture and our cemeteries are not respected by law.''

A handful of the 70 archaeologists working at the site have resigned in protest of the conditions. Some remains have been destroyed.
