Indian Country jails subject of Senate hearing

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold an oversight hearing on tribal detention facilities on Wednesday.

Justice Department reports have shown that Indian Country jails are overcrowded and understaffed. But it wasn't until this year that more attention was drawn to the issue, when a retired law enforcement official documented poor conditions of the facilities.

Assistant secretary Dave Anderson is expected to testify at the hearing. He created a task force to address the condition of the jails.

More information on the hearing will be posted at http://indian.senate.gov.
