Nevada tribe seeks protections for sacred sites

The Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe is seeking greater protections for sacred sites located on federal land.

The tribe asked the Bureau of Land Management wants 22,477 acres surrounding the Grimes Point Archaeological Area and nearly all of the Stillwater Mountain range designated as Areas of Critical Environmental Concern. The proposal calls for restrictions on vehicle traffic, more law enforcement to keep looters away, a ban on mining and other conservation measures.

The area has already been heavily looted, the tribe says.
