South Dakota site believed to be 500 years old

South Dakota officials have notified nine tribes in the state and others as far away as Montana after the inadvertent discovery of an ancestral burial site.

Heavy rain on July 8 exposed human remains and other artifacts. The items were found in topsoil that had been moved from a different location.

State officials have already met with the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe to discuss handling of the site, which is in private hands. The site is being secured to keep looters away.
