State aims to take recognition fight to Supreme Court

Despite his losing record, Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal says he won't give up his fight against tribes in the state and is willing to take the battle all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Blumenthal is challenging the federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation and the Schaghticokes Tribal Nation. He failed to convince the Bureau of Indian Affairs that both tribes did not deserve federal status.

In another dispute, Blumenthal tried to stop the BIA from taking land into trust for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. He lost the case and the Supreme Court refused to take his appeal.

Some, even those who have been critical of tribes, say people like Blumenthal should try to work towards a compromise. "[Y]ou get to a point where you sit there and go, `Is there any chance of us prevailing at the end of the day?'" one town leader tells The Hartford Courant.
