The Pala Band of Mission Indians of California is joining forces with state and county officials to clean up a rural trash dump that people fear could pollute the San Luis Rey River.

The tribe will contribute a $25,000 grant from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to the effort. The tribe will also spend $6,000 to keep places on and off the reservation clean.

Separately, the tribe is fighting a proposed landfill that could harm the river. The Gregory County dump would be located near two sacred sites.
