Sac and Fox Nation helps get road project off ground

Officials in Oklahoma are crediting the Sac and Fox Nation with helping get a long-delayed road project off the ground.

Officials in Shawnee tried to get state funding to widen a portion of a state highway that was prone to accidents. But until the tribe stepped in, the project was going nowhere.

The tribe's involvement led to a city-tribal-state-federal partnership. Under the Indian Reservation Road program, the tribe funded $2.3 million of a $2.9 million project that included improving the highway and adding a bridge and a culvert.

Tribal leaders will be on hand today for a ceremony to mark the completion of the project.
