Federal Recognition
Michigan county backs tribe's bid for recognition

Muskegon County, Michigan, commissioners voted on Tuesday to support the Grand River Band of Ottawa Indians' bid for federal recognition. The city of Muskegon is expected to do the same.

Commissioners said they would lobby members of Congress to recognize the tribe. A meeting is already planned with Michigan Sens. Carl Levin (D) and Debbie Stabenow (D).

The tribe has been seeking recognition since the 1990s. Chairman Ron Yob said opening a casino is possible. Voters in the city of Muskegon approved a referendum in support of gaming.
