Senate panel approves $5.5M for Meskwaki school

The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $5.5 million for construction of a new high school on the Meskwaki Reservation in Iowa, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said on Wednesday.

Grassley says a school is needed to combat the 50 percent drop-out rate among tribal youth. The tribe would pay for the other half of the construction with gaming revenues.

The funding is part of the Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services approved by the committee yesterday. The Senate is trying to move several appropriations bills.
