Winnebago Tribe creating village for members

The first families are moving into Ho-Chunk Village, a new development of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.

The tribe began diversifying its economy but noticed that tribal members were leaving the reservation. The problem was lack of housing.

In hopes of keeping people at home, the tribe created the 40-acre village for housing and other development. Four homes have been built; 110 are planned.

The tribe has raised $6 million in federal grants and other sources to build the village. Prospective homeowners must take classes in credit and housing before they receive assistance from the tribe.
