Alaska Native executive returned to power

An Alaska Native corporation executive who had been removed by secret ballot earlier this year has been returned to power by the shareholders.

Sheri Buretta was elected chair of Chugach Alaska Corporation, the most profitable Native corporation. Under her leadership, Chugach saw its revenues and profits double last year and the corporation has become a major defense contractor for the federal government.

Buretta's ouster had been orchestrated by director Edgar Blatchford, who was re-elected. Blatchford, a state official, tried to postpone the election, in which his allies offered shareholders prizes of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 prizes for voting.
