Researchers have discovered a new species of small humans that lived on an island 18,000 years ago.

Researchers found the nearly complete remains of a woman and other remains in a cave on the island of Flores. The island, part of Indonesia, is very isolated, leading researchers to believe that this species evolved to its small size in response to limited food.

Humans of the species, named Homo floresiensis, were about three feet tall and had grapefruit-sized brains, according to research published in the journal Nature. The species was said to arrive on the island 840,000 years ago.
