Incoming Montana governor reaches out to tribes

Incoming Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) is planning to put representatives of Montana's eight tribes on his 20-member transition team.

Schweitzer said he would put eight tribal members on the team and asked tribes to submit candidates for top state positions. He plans to fill the vacant Indian affairs adviser position and is considering creating a Cabinet-level Department of Indian Affairs.

Schweitzer plans to visit all eight tribes, including the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe. He said he would help the tribe's bid for federal recognition, which is currently in the final stages at the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
