BIA sees opposition on reservation power plant

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is conducting a series of public meetings for a proposed $2.3 billion power plant on the Navajo Nation.

The meeting in Farmington, New Mexico, last night was filled with opponents of the project, The Farmington Daily Times reported. People questioned why the BIA was holding meetings in Phoenix, Arizona, but not in other affected communities.

Speakers also said the BIA shouldn't be the lead agency on the project. One person suggested the Environmental Protection Agency be in charge.

National Park Service employees raised objections, saying the plant could harm archaeological resources and hurt air quality.

Additional meetings are being held in Gallup, New Mexico, tonight and Thursday in Flagstaff, Arizona.
