California tribe fights housing development

The United Auburn Indian Community is challenging a proposal to build nearly 700 homes in an area that contains burial grounds and ancient tribal villages.

The tribe only recently became aware of the project and has joined forces with the Clover Valley Foundation, an environmental group, to fight it. The tribe gave $40,000 to the organization for a public outreach campaign.

The developer is surprised at the tribe's involvement. A project manager said he consulted the state-designated representative for the tribe and scaled down the project in order to protect the area, which dates to 2000 B.C.
