New Mexico lawmakers propose voter ID law

Republican legislators and some Democrats in New Mexico are supporting a bill that would require voters to show identification at the polls.

In addition to driver's license, the bill accepts identification issued by tribes. Other alternatives include a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document.

South Dakota passed a voter ID law that drew complaints on reservations. Some Indian voters said they were turned away at the polls because they lacked a photo ID and weren't told they could sign an affidavit instead.
