Editorial: Hard to be optimistic on tribe's college

"Everything is working out - finally - at Si Tanka University, officials say.

Really? That's based on:

# A tentative agreement - not finalized - with creditors.

# A plan yet to be approved by the federal government that would release funds.

# A belief that enrollment is growing - although no one at the university will release figures.

# A governance restructuring that is essentially a way around federal rules to continue receiving money - a plan not yet approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Optimism is great, but students, staff and the Huron community need a little more. It's time for Si Tanka administrators to be forthcoming, talk to the public, fully explain the situation - the challenges and opportunities."
