Tribal-friendly candidate running for mayor

A lawyer who helped pave the way for California's tribal gaming industry is running for mayor of Los Angeles.

Bob Hertzberg and his father Harrison Hertzberg represented the Barona Band of Mission Indians in its battle to offer bingo. In a landmark ruling, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in 1982 said that state gaming laws don't apply to tribes.

The decision led to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the Cabazon case of 1987 that affirmed the rights of tribes to conduct gaming. Bob Hertzberg says gaming has benefited tribes.

As a state lawmaker, Hertzberg received at least $105,000 from the Barona Band.
