Memorial service scheduled for Oregon tribe's chief


A public viewing and memorial service have been scheduled for James Lott, Sr., the elected chief of the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians of Oregon.

Lott, 52, died in his sleep over the weekend after suffering heart complications.

A public viewing will be held tomorrow at the Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield. A memorial service is planned for April 2 at the Many Nations Long House at the University of Oregon

�Our tribe has lost a leader who believed in family and cared deeply for our traditions,� said Chairman Ron Brainard in a statement. �Our sorrow is great and our hearts are heavy. Our sympathy is extended to the Chief�s family. We were blessed to have the Chief serve our tribe.�
