First Nation seeks answers in tuberculosis outbreak

Leaders of the York Factory Cree Nation in Manitoba say they need more information from the government in order to combat an outbreak of tuberculosis that has infected one-quarter of the reserve's population.

Over the last three years, more than 123 people have tested positive or developed the respiratory illness. The disease is easily transmitted through the air and can be fatal if not treated properly.

Health Canada says Native communities are at high risk of tuberculosis due to overcrowded housing, diabetes and other problems. In 2004, two-thirds of all TB cases in Manitoba were of Natives.
