Utah board to study payment for traditional services

The Utah Crime Victim Reparations board created a subcommittee on Wednesday to consider whether traditional Native healers should be compensated for providing services to Native victims.

Utah already pays for inpatient and outpatient mental health services performed by licensed practitioners. Other states, including Arizona, New Mexico and Michigan, also pay for Native healers.

An FBI victim specialist recommended the board ensure medicine men are qualified and recognized in tribal communities.
