Isolated tribe in Paraguay loses bid for reservation

An isolated tribe in Paraguay that has avoided contact with outsiders will not receive a reservation, prompting Indian advocates to predict devastation for the Ayoreo people.

The Ayoreos live in an area of Paraguay that is being encroached by logging companies. In hopes of protecting their way of life, Indian advocates proposed a bill to set aside a reservation for the tribe.

But Paraguay's Congress rejected the bill on Thursday. The county's constitution recognizes Indian rights but little is done to protect Indian lands, according to Reuters.
