Supreme Court won't rehear Oneida Nation case

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected a request to rehear the Oneida Nation's land rights case.

The Oneida Nation sought the rehearing in light of the March 29 ruling that went against the tribe. The justices, in an 8-1 decision, said the tribe cannot "unilaterally" assert sovereignty over its land claim area without going through the land-into-trust process.

The tribe has since asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take about 18,000 acres into trust. But local communities are demanding the tribe pay property taxes on its properties. The town of Verona has asked for $384 million in assessments but the tribe says it can't be taxed as a sovereign.
