McCaleb tells tribes to support gasoline tax hike

Former assistant secretary Neal McCaleb, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, urged Oklahoma tribes on Wednesday to support a proposed hike in the state gasoline tax.

Neal McCaleb, a former state Transportation Secretary, spoke at the 18th annual Sovereignty Symposium in Oklahoma City. He said tribes with fuel compacts would receive an extra $7.5 million if the tax goes up.

McCaleb is heading a group called Oklahomans for Safe Bridges and Roads to seek passage of SQ 723. The Chickasaw Nation, which employs McCaleb as a consultant, gave to the $10,000 campaign. McCaleb called on other tribe to donate as well. "It's an investment for the tribes," he said, The Oklahoman reported.
