Paiute Tribe celebrates 25 years of restoration

The Paiute Tribe of Utah held a powwow over the weekend to celebrate the 25th anniversary of federal restoration.

The tribe is made up of five separate bands. All but one band was terminated in 1954.

The results were devastating. No longer eligible for federal health and other benefits, nearly one-half of the tribal population died. About 15,000 acres of tribal lands were lost.

The tribe finally regained federal recognition on April 3, 1980, with the passage of the Paiute Restoration Act. "In the 20 years since the Paiute Restoration Act was passed, our membership has grown tremendously," Shiviwts Band leader Glenn Rogers once said in Senate testimony. "Forty-five percent of our members are under age 20."
