Kosher meat plant taps into Pine Ridge workforce

A kosher meat plant in Nebraska hopes to draw 40 to 50 workers from the nearby Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

The Local Pride firm is working with the Oglala Oyate Woitancan Empowerment Zone and the Oglala Sioux Tribe's Workforce in Action Program to promote the plant. If it passes a Department of Agriculture inspection, it could be up and running next week.

Tribal members have already undergone some training at the plant. Since it is located in the empowerment zone, the Local Pride firm, which operates a kosher plant in Iowa, it is entitled to tax breaks.
