Bombs exploded in four locations across the city during rush hour traffic. Three subway trains and one double-decker bus were hit. At least 37 people died and 700 others were injured.

Early reports indicate the attack was the work of the al-Qaeda terrorist network. A similar bombing was carried out in Madrid, Spain, last year.
