Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearings

There are three hearings of interest this week before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

On Tuesday, July 26, the committee holds an oversight hearing on legislation to resolve Cobell v. Norton. Sens. John McCain (R-Arizona) and Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), the chairman and vice chairman, introduced a bill last week to settle the case and make some changes at the Interior Department. The initial reaction from Indian Country has been mixed.

On Wednesday, July 27, the committee holds another oversight hearing on Indian gaming. The topic this time is Indian Gaming Regulatory Act exceptions and off-reservation gaming.

On Thursday, July 28, the committee holds an oversight hearing on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. Sen. McCain is sponsoring a bill that would make a controversial change to the law in order to help tribe tribes repatriate remains and artifacts.
