First Nations leader killed in vehicle accident

Grand Chief Archie Jack of the Penticton Indian Band was killed in a single-car accident in Saskatchewan on Wednesday.

Jack led his tribe for 10 years as chief. He was a founding member of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs and the first tribal member to serve as a school trustee for the local school district.

Jack retired from office in 1996. He dedicated his efforts to preserving the tribe's language. He was one of the few remaining fluent speakers of Okanagan.
