Development of burial site in Minnesota proceeds

A burial mound in the Twin Cities area is larger and more significant than previously thought, The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The Lincoln Mounds first came to light when work crews discovered remains at the site of the Bloomington Central Station Project, a $700 million development near the Mall of America. At first, only one ancestor was uncovered but the paper says 55 people -- including more than 20 children -- were buried there.

The Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, working with the Upper Sioux Community and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe, agreed to have the remains removed. But the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota Community, an unrecognized tribe, says the bones should have stayed put.

The Lincoln Mounds were located on about 1 to 2 acres of the 43-acre site, according to the paper.
