The Navajo Nation Council is set to vote on legislation that would outlaw same-sex marriages.
Council delegate Larry Anderson Sr. introduced the bill. He said Navajo traditions define marriage as between a man and a woman.
Wesley K. Thomas, a Navajo man who is an assistant professor of anthropology, disagrees. He says same-sex relations have always been a part of Navajo culture.
The council will take up the measure during its winter session later this month.
