Bill would add $226M to tribal trust accounts

Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D-South Dakota) has introduced a bill to add $226 million to the trust accounts of two tribes.

Herseth said the Crow Creek Tribe and the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe were not adequately compensated for losing valuable land, sacred sites and other property to Missouri River dams. So the Tribal Party Act would add $79 million to the Crow Creek account, raising the total payment to $106 million, while adding $147 million to the Lower Brule account, rasing the payment to $186 million.

Congress compensated several tribes in South Dakota and North Dakota, plus one in Nebraska, for Missouri River losses.
