Thomas Blackweasel, revered Blackfeet leader, dies


Thomas Blackweasel, an elder of the Blackfeet Nation who led efforts to keep the Piegan language alive, died on Friday, August 26, of natural causes. He was 70.

Blackweasel often led ceremonies and public events in the Blackfeet language. He taught the language at Blackfeet Community College and lectured on tribal issues.

Blackweasel was trained in linguistics at the University of New Mexico. He was a contributor to the permanent online exhibit, "Niisitapisinni: Our Way of Life," at the Glenbow Museum and Archives in Calgary.
