Morongo Band awards $30K in college scholarships

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians presented $30,000 in scholarships to three Indian college students who are members of California tribes.

Each student is receiving $10,000 from the Rodney T. Mathews, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. The program, in its second year, has been extended through 2008 and the tribe will award $40,000 starting next year.

This year, three women received money to continue their education. Carly Juanita Tex, a member of the North Fork Mono Rancheria, is a student at Sonoma State University who is pursuing a degree in education to further her tribe's language and traditions.

Christina Ann Brown, a member of the Owens Valley Paiute Tribe, is enrolled at University of North Dakota School of Medicine and a participant in the Indians Into Medicine (INMED) program. She plans to become a doctor.

Ki-Shan D. Lara, a member of the Hupa Valley Tribe, is a student at Arizona State University, where she is pursuing a doctoral degree in linguistics.
